One day this week I saw a new link from Vladan Seget that I thought would be something good to know. This is a quick run down on how to compile and build your ISO for installation using PowerCLI. The ISO downloaded from the vmware page under the free access, generally is not the most up to date build. With the following, you can build out the latest installable.
Download the latest patches: (VMWare Log in required)
Go to VMware Product Patches
On the first dropdown select “ESXi (Embedded and Installable) Hit Search
Select the first result, note most recent release date
Download the zip file to a folder, noting the location
Using powershell (ill be using the powershell integrated scripting environment ISE) change directory to the download folder “cd”
Run the following to add the offline depot ZIP file to the current PowerCLI session.
Next display the available image profiles.
Get-EsxImageProfile | ft -AutoSize
Finally run the following to export the profile to ISO file which can then be used for update and installation of ESXi.
Export-EsxImageProfile -ImageProfile ESXi-6.5.0-20170404001-standard -ExportToISO -FilePath ESXi-6.5.0-20170404001.iso
The folder will now have the zip depot and the new iso for use.
