Objective 1.4: Understand VMware NSX Integration with Third-Party Products and Services

  • Integration with third-party Partner Tools and Systems using NSX REST API
    • REST API is exposed by NSX Manager
    • NSX API Guide 6.2
      • See Chapter 1
    • NSX API Guide 6.3
    • Consumed by
      • Cloud management platforms
      • Service management portals
      • Internal workflow
    • As calls are made to NSX manager, it must be running of course
    • Route to Cloud Blog about NSX API

  • Service Insertion
    • IDS, IPS, anti-malware are not part of NSX directly but NSX allows for insertion capabilities from outside 3rd parties
    • Edge service insertion vs distributed service insertion, NSX Edge can redirect traffic to third party items for inspection, distributed is about components deployed on each participating host, which can incorporate vmotion
    • Have an idea where to configure this in NSX for EDGE or Distributed services

  • Integration with 3rd Party Hardware
    • Helps with overall design considerations
    • NSX with Cisco 7K and UCS design Guide
      • See page 7 for information on amount of vxlan tunnel endpoints per host count
    • Review OVSDB for third party connection

  • Install/Register 3rd Party Services with NSX
    • Depends on type of product on how it will be registered
    • Review order of installation for your product, to get workflow
    • Look at the NSX Administration Guide chapter 23, page 264
      • Gives you the process and possible prerequisites
    • Install vs Regiester
    • Service Deployment, like 3rd party template appliance vs Service Definition, like Palo Alto services
